what's new?

It's been a busy week!  I guess the Royal Wedding is the biggest news for the week.  I admit I got tired of all the hub bub...I mean it's cool and all but...it's all consuming for some.  I didn't intend to watch the wedding but it was on TLC when I got up so I watched it.  Kate looked stunning...such a knock out.  I've always been a fan of wedding dresses with sleeves (mine had them!) so I'm sure that'll be the "new thing" since it seems like all you ever see are strapless dresses these days.  And she did her own makeup...I did my own too...I'm a total trend setter (just kidding- I still dress like I'm in college hehe).  Anyways- it was beautiful and I hope they have a happy life together.

Can I say how proud I am of my munchkin pants?!?  He's taking private swimming lessons at our club not because we're snobs but because he was way too distracted when there were other kids in his class.  We did have a not so great incident happen so for our own peace of mind we just consider the cost well worth it.  I sat in on the last 5 minutes of class this past week.  He showed me all his new "tricks"...he's swimming on his back by himself for about half a minute kicking his way to his teacher, he dives underwater to grab the teacher's goggles (a game they play), he's jumping in...it was so great.  I got teary eyed.  He's improved so much, so worth it!

Yesterday we went to a horse farm for a preschool field trip and he was set on only riding the pony, which he did but he decided to ride last minute on the "BIG" one.  No straps or anything to hold him in...I might of had to do a little deep breathing!  :)  He rode like a champ!  My big boy is growing up-- WAHHH!!!!

I started my restrictive diet this past monday- it's going fine so far.  I've decided to cut out dairy too so it doesn't leave me much, just veggies, meat and carbs. Thrillsville!  I did go ahead and get some Kava which is a hard to find coffee that is acid neutralized.  It's pretty good and fuels my habit so everything is more tolerable.

Next month we're headed to Great Wolf Lodge...so excited.  I love it there just as much as my son.  We're in definite need of a vacation after a month of stressful health issues.

Hope you all had a wonderful Easter- I know we did.  Munchkin pants got a dog Pillow Pet from the Easter bunny-- it hasn't left his side since he got it.  So sweet!

Have a fabulous weekend!

my new favorite product

Have you seen these??  They are so much fun!  Sally Hansen's Salon Effects...

I'm currently on my 3rd set.  I've tried the multi glitter (2nd from the right- bottom row) the black and white flowers and currently the black and white houndstooth.  I never really paint my nails because the nail polish chips so quickly.  These are the perfect alternative.  It says they last up to 10 days but I've only left mine on for about eight.  They retail for around $9.99.

I was rough on my first set and they held up very well.  They are also easy to put on, just a bit time consuming.   I put mine on today while I was catching up on my dvr.

Super fun- check them out at your local one stop shopping store.

i'm not gonna lie...

life has been stressful for me these past two weeks.  If you don't want to hear about all my health problems or you think it's TMI...then don't read this post.

I went to the doc's last week with two issues- bladder and uterus.  Fun eh??  I won't get too descriptive on ya don't worry.  I was facebooking with a good friend of mine who has had some issues too - let's face it-women are really good at sympathising/commiserating with each other.  I know I'm putting myself out there but in my opinion you always feel better if you know someone who has gone through similar experiences.

I had a bladder infection (they think) which caused a lot of pain and the constant need to use the bathroom.  It's getting better but I followed up with a Urologist today.  After a very invasive exam she thought that my problems could be resolved with a special "bladder" diet.  This means no alcohol, hardly any fruit, sugar, tomatoes, coffee (*HELP*), carbonated beverages, and the list goes on.  On Monday I have to go extreme and cut out everything!  If my symptoms improve then I'll know the problem is due to something I'm eating.  If they don't then it's onto the next step which is probably meds.  She also noticed I have a heart murmur...which I remember a doc telling me ages ago- but no other doc had picked up.  So I guess I get to add that to my list of things to talk about at my next appt.

Now for the uterus...after an ultrasound and another invasive exam they noticed that I have a tiny fibroid and a borderline thickened wall.  I have a follow up ultrasound in June to check the thickness once again.  What does that mean??  Well I guess if you have a thickened wall it could prompt them to order a biopsy for fear of uterine cancer.  I'm really hoping and praying that that's not what it is and that my issues are hormone related.  Trying to stay positive that it's nothing serious but prayers would be great!!

I'm really thankful for wonderful insurance, top doctors who live in our area (Seattle) and a hubby who supports me and can work from home when I need to jet off to these appts.  I guess the moral to the story is- if you're healthy- don't take if for granted!

diaper milkshake tutorial

Another fun Baby Shower Gift tutorial for you...Diaper Milkshakes...or Layette Milkshakes.

Four Full Sizes Washcloths
Four Size One Diapers
Four White Onesies
Four Clear Cold Beverage Cups with Lids (I got mine at Cash & Carry--I think they are 24oz.)
Beverage Tray (for presentation-- again I got mine at Cash & Carry)

Lay your washcloth flat (I purchased these at Kohl's)
Fold the tag edge in towards the center.
Fold in half and flip washcloth over so you see that band/trim.  (your first fold is now on top)
Place one diaper on top of your washcloth.
Start rolling...
until you get to the end.
Place inside the cup.
For the onesie, the "whip cream" fold snaps and arms towards center.
Bunch up into a little pile.
Put the bunch in your lid and snap lid on the cup.  You could stop at this point...but I like a little topper.
You could either do a red sock as a "cherry" or use a faux cherry.  I had some faux strawberries on hand so I just used those.  Place your topper in the lid first.
Smush the onesie around the topper and place on top of the cup.
Never hurts to add a cute sticker to each cup.
I couldn't stop with just a strawberry so I cut a striped straw in half and tucked one in each cup next to the strawberry.
Strawberry Milkshakes!!!
You don't have to use a beverage tray...you could put them in a little box or whatever you might have around the house.  The gift looks great when you wrap it up in cellophane and tie it off with a bow and tag.

netbook cover

Check out the super cute sleeve I bought from Lollington for my netbook...

I contacted Lollington for a custom design...a cupcake of course!  Feliza, owner, was so helpful and very sweet.  She created this one of a kind sleeve for me.  It's very well made, very durable and lots of cushion to keep the computer protected.

extreme couponing

Have you seen this new show on TLC?

Wowzers!  I'm all for clipping coupons and trying to save some money, but these people take it to a whole new level.  I have to admit it is fascinating to see a grocery bill go from over a $1,000 to just a few bucks but it's pretty obvious they have an addiction to it.  Many of them speak of the "rush" or "thrill"...calling themselves "shopaholics".  They buy stuff they don't even need just to see their "stockpile" grow.  One gal said her stockpile was almost as beautiful as her family...yikes.  Seems to feed into the stereotype of Americans...over indulgence.

All that being said I am going to try and do better with my coupons.  :)

diaper cake tutorial

My friend needed a diaper cake for a friend's baby shower this weekend so I thought it was the perfect time to document my process.  This is a tutorial for a three tier wrapped diaper cake meaning each tier is wrapped with a receiving blanket, no diapers will be showing.  There are several styles of diaper cakes including rolled or a simple diaper cake (this style is not rolled but the diapers are exposed and decorated with ribbon).  I'm not a fan of the rolled diaper cakes--it takes a lot of practice to make them look really good!  I've seen so many that are major sloppy looking- save yourself some time with this style.

Okay so what do you need?

50 Size One Diapers
3 or 4 Receiving Blankets
6 Diaper Pins
A support system for the center of the cake (empty gift wrap roll)
Cake Board (10")

I start by folding the three blankets.  You will want them to vary in height.  My measurements are roughly:

  • Top Tier (paisley print) 3 1/2"
  • Middle Tier (polka dot) 4 1/2"
  • Bottom Tier (flowers) 5 1/2"

After folding them- I iron each one to get the wrinkles out.
Take the blanket for the bottom tier and fold it over so the ends slightly overlap and pin them together with two diaper pins.
Set up your tier (I had an extra blanket using the same print so I tucked this blanket inside the tier).
Start filling your blanket/tier in with the diapers.  You'll notice these diapers have a print on them so that's why this style of diaper cake is perfect- the diaper don't show!
Fill in your tier until it is snug and then center your support in the middle.  You could get fancy and cover your support with some cute wrapping paper so it's not plain brown.  Up to you!
You will notice that there is a gap between the top of the diapers and the top edge of the tier- that is where your shred comes into play.  It fills in this gap.  The shred is a bit crazy...but we'll fix that later.
Move onto your second tier- and do the exact same thing.  You will want this tier to be a bit smaller so when you roll it and pin it, make sure it's overlapping a bit more.  If you don't do this, all your tiers will be the same width and it won't look like a "real" cake.

Fill in with diapers, since it's smaller you won't need as many.
Place on top of the bottom tier centering and making sure the diaper pins align in the back.  Add shred on the top of your second tier.
And lastly- the top tier...you'll want to overlap this one quite a bit to make it narrow and then pin it with your last two diaper pins.  Fill with the remaining diapers.
And stack on top!  You will now need to adjust your tiers--pushing/pulling/smooshing to make sure the tiers are centered.  Turn your diaper cake around and make sure it looks good from all sides.

Oh and a surprise guest in the background!  :)
Next up -- wrap each tier with coordinating ribbon.  If you are not comfortable tying a bow in the front you can always wrap the ribbon around and just knot it in the back.  I've done it this way- it gives the cake a more streamlined/modern look.
My friend presented me with a challenge for the topper (thanks lady!).  Usually I top the cakes with a simple little plushie (that has legs).  This little cutie had a head but no legs...one of those blanket combos.  You'll see in my previous pics I had shred on the top tier, well I took it off because it doesn't show with this topper.  I trimmed off the center support and placed the teddy's head right on top of it and tied it with ribbon.  I then shooshed up the blanket and added some clippies.

At this point you'll also want to trim the shred around each tier so it's not dangling everywhere and trim the ribbon ends.
And if you want- you can wrap it all up in cellophane for a finished gift!
